Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings was questioned about WWE being allowed to film in the county while the state is under lockdown during one of his televised press conferences to update the public on COVID-19.
“I think initially there was a review that was done and they were not initially deemed an essential business,” Demings said as he chose his words carefully how to go around answering the question. “With some conversation with the Governor’s office regarding the governor’s order, they were deemed an essential business, therefore they were allowed to remain open.”
The order from the Governor was signed on Thursday and states that employees at professional sports and media production with a national audience can continue operate if the location is closed to the general public. CNN, which also covered the story, said that officials told them this essential service was added because it is “critical to Florida’s economy.”
Asked about the performer who tested positive for the coronavirus, Mayor Demings compared that to WWE having a family member getting the virus and hoped that WWE took all the necessary precautions to prevent it from spreading.
WWE resumed live broadcasts yesterday and will be able to operate freely within the Performance Center during the lockdown.
